Weight gain and loss can be for a variety of reasons such as season, age, or illness. Horses known as “hard-keepers” are those that are fed large calorie diets and can’t put or keep weight on. Illness, parasites, dental problems, gastric ulcers, and stress can cause a horse to stop eating altogether and drastically lose weight.
