Two horses in Weld County and one horse in LaPlata County have been diagnosed with Equine West Nile Virus (WNV). All three cases were diagnosed by Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Fort Collins. Horses are a dead-end host and therefore infected horses pose no threat to public health but they can be severely affected and they are an indicator of the presence of the virus in mosquito populations.
Here is some important information for horse owners from the Colorado Horse Council:
1. Contact a veterinarian if horses exhibit clinical signs consistent with WNV so that a proper diagnosis can be obtained - clinical signs include head tilt, muscle tremors, lack of coordination, weakness of the limbs or partial paralysis
2. Be aware that clinical signs of WNV are consistent with other important neurological diseases such as equine encephalitis, rabies, and equine herpes virus so work with your veterinarian to get an accurate diagnosis through laboratory testing
3. Consult a veterinarian on appropriate prevention strategies
4. Mitigate the mosquito populations and possible mosquito breeding areas on your property
5. Take precautions to develop methods to repel mosquitos from biting your horse
6. Vaccinate your horses for WNV as it is a very effective prevention tool
7. Protect yourself by using appropriate WNV preventive activities suggested by public health experts (see links in comments). ... See more

Neat post about how bison "hoof action" can get rid of invasive plant species. No chemicals needed!
Remember that "hoof action" we talked about yesterday? Here is a great example of those bison hooves at work. This was a patch of Canadian Thistle, a common invasive species. We turned a herd into this pasture just before the seeds were ripe on the thistle and let the bison trample it down and grind it up over the course of a few days. From an invasive pest to fertilizer without lifting a finger. Or mixing up a sprayer full of chemicals. You can accomplish a lot with proper grazing management. It's not as easy as chemicals but it's a whole lot better. The weeds will struggle to come back in this location but grasses thrive with this kind of stimulation. This will slowly convert to high quality forage each time it sees this kind of impact. The key is quick hits with long rest. On for 2-4 days and off for 45+. The results are incredible! ... See more
