We are excited to now offer the Flax Factor flax oil by EquiPride. This product is 100% pure, filtered flax oil, providing your horses with the Omega 3s they need in their diet. Although the EquiPride and EquiLix contain fermented flax and ground flax the percentage fat is 5%. The flax oil is 100% fat providing help building weight, resolving skin/coat issues, adding support to joints, help with tying up symptoms and gastric ulcers.

Most equine diets are high in Omega 6s and lacking in Omega 3s. Additionally, most competitive oils are high in Omega 6s. It is important that horses have the appropriate Omega 6: Omega 3 ratio. Flax factor will provide the Omega 3s your horse needs to balance out the 6s.

Value of improving the ratio of Omega 3 & Omega 6 oil in horse feed.

Improving the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 oils in horse feed supports overall health and performance of horses,  Omega-3 and omega-6 are essential fatty acids but not produced by the body.  They only come from feeds. Outside of fresh pasture grass, most feeds have an imbalance — too much omega-6, too little omega-3.

This imbalance influences a number of health issues in horses and other animals.

Improving the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids has several benefits:

Anti-inflammatory effects: Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, while omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory. By increasing  omega-3, the inflammatory response in horses and other animals can be better regulated, reducing risk of chronic inflammation-related diseases such as arthritis, insulin resistance, or inflammatory skin conditions. 

Improved immune function: Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have a positive impact on the immune system, helping fight off infections and illnesses more effectively.

Cardiovascular health: Omega-3 fatty acids are known to have cardiovascular benefits, such as improving heart function. By increasing omega-3 intake and balancing the ratio with omega-6, horses and other animals may experience improved cardiovascular health.

Improved weight maintenance & skin and coat health: Balancing the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio can promote healthy skin and a shiny coat in horses, reducing the risk of skin issues like dryness, itching, or dull coat.  An additional notable benefit is helping older horses & hard-doers hold their weight.  By optimizing the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio (4:1), owners can help promote better animal health and well-being, leading to improved performance.

Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are both types of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), but they have some key differences:

1. Chemical Structure: Omega-6 fatty acids have their first double bond at the sixth carbon atom from the omega (methyl) end of the fatty acid chain, while omega-3 fatty acids have their first double bond at the third carbon atom from the omega end.

2. Ratio: Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are both essential fatty acids, meaning that our bodies cannot produce them and we need to obtain them from our diet. However, the typical Western diet tends to have a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, often around 15:1 or higher, while the ideal ratio for optimal health is considered to be closer to 4:1 or even 1:1.

3. Health Effects: Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids have different effects on the body. Omega-6 fatty acids are generally pro-inflammatory, meaning they promote inflammation in the body, while omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is associated with various health issues, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Therefore, maintaining a balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is important for overall health.

4. Food Sources: Omega-6 fatty acids are commonly found in vegetable oils (such as soybean, corn, and sunflower oil), nuts, and seeds. Omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, are found in fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines), flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and certain algae.

It’s important to note that while both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential for our health, it’s the balance between the two that is crucial. Consuming too much omega-6 fatty acids relative to omega-3s can contribute to an imbalance and potential health problems.
